According to the city's public relations magazine KUSATSU, wisteria flowers at Sandai-jinja Shrine
in Shina-tyo town, Kusatsu City come into blooming season and so Fuji-matsuri
Festival will take
place from April 29th through May 13th.
The weather recovered after two days of rain.
It's warm with temperatures of up to 24 degrees Celsius today.
So I went there to see the wisteria flowers by beloved bike.
Sandai-jinja Shrine is located in the idyllic village which is not so
far from my home.
I rode a bike along the farm road for a while.
When I was pedaling toward Lake Biwa after crossing the Hama-kaido Road
at the Kita-oogaya
traffic light, I found a banner-flag printed as "Fuji-no-omiya Sandai-jinja
Shrine" fluttering in the wind.
When I pedaled for about ten minute from home , I arrived at the shrine.

When I passed through the torii gate to go in the shrine, I found local
village people receiving
visitors in a temporary tent.
I payed 200 yen for an entrance fee to enter the shrine.
The approach leading to the front shrine from the torii gate is lined
with two westeria trellises.
The following is a photo of a wisteria treillis at the back of grounds
of the shrine.
A wisteria wound around this trellis is a old tree of “Noda-fuji”,which
is a type of westeria.
It is said that the tree is about 400 years old.
It has been designated natural monuments by Shiga Prefecture and also Kusatsu
City as an
ancient tree.
It produces purple flowers and its ears grow up to 2 meters long.
And so it is called “Sunazuri-no-fuji”.

Have a look at the old wisteria as much as you want.
It has only partially blossomed so far.
The wisteria flowers will be at their peak after about a week.

There are also potted wisteria flowers.
Let me show you one of the typical flowers.
When I stick my break to the petals, they smell like something sweet.
You can see the front shrine on your right when you move further inside.

According to the stone marker in the shrine, the shrine begun in 665 when
Nakatomi-no-kane-no-muraji enshrined Shinatsuhiko and Shinatsuhime.
The stone lantern standing in the main shrine is designated national important
cultural properties.
There is an engraved mark of the year of 1291 on the surface, I heard.
It was pretty rounded by passage of years.

I celebrated wisteria flowers for about an hour.
I had my picture taken in front of the wisteria trellis before returning
home.
I pedaled for home in a leisurely manner along the road in the beautiful
spring countryside.
I could see hazy Mt.Ohmi-fuji beyond emerald green fields of wheat.
