Growing population in Kusatsu City. No.111−Jul.5, 2010

At the beginning of every month,a public relations magazine issued by Kusatsu
City is distributed to families of the city.
Its title is "KUSATSU".

It contains up-to-date informations like about the municipal administration,
city-sponsored events, various announcements to the citizens and so on.

When I was reading the July issue of the magazine,I was attracted to a small
article about population, its composition and the number of households as shown
below on the last line of the front page of the magazine.

As of June30, population: 121,655( +159) Men: 61,056( +69)
Women: 60,599( +90) households: 49,694( +105)

Month-to-month basis are shown in parentheses.

When I moved from Yokohama to Kusatsu in Shiga prefecture, I have heard
a rumor that Kusatsu is one of the city in Japan which the population has
increased year after year.

I see.
This article was as right as I've heard.

However,I imagined that I couldn't believe it with only two datas for the last two
months.
And so I examined the past changes in population through the Web site of
Kusatsu city.

The results are summarized in the following table.
They are the population collected every decade from 1955 to 1995, the population
in the past 5 years and the monthly population in the past year.

I knew the rumor that the population in Kusatsu city has increased year after
year was right as the table above shows.

The results show Kusatsu was a pretty rural and thinly populated area in our
childhood.

Even since the Heisei Period, the population has still increased at the rate of
about 1,000 to 2,000 people a year, in spite of a current era of an aging
population and declining birthrate.

I'm sure Kusatsu city has something comfortable to live in and so it results in a
population flow from other area to Kusatsu.
The reason might be because of cheap prices or good human services or quality
of the environment in Kusatsu.

Since I moved to such a good place to live, I might realize my dream of living up
to 100 years.

All I have to do is to maintain a healthy body and mind by golfing, yachting and
cycling and so slow down the rate of aging as much as possible.

I'll do my best !
